Akrotiri Sovereign Base Area is one of two British Overseas Territories on the island of Cyprus, used as military bases by the United Kingdom. It is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula on the southern coast. Not typically accessible for tourists, the base area does contain some sites of interest, including the ancient city-kingdom site of Kourion and the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates. However, these are more conveniently reached from the Cypriot side. The area is of particular interest for its strategic importance and the ongoing political discussions about the future of the British bases in Cyprus.
